A busy NBA trade deadline last week strengthened the Miami Heat’s position in the Eastern Conference. That didn’t stop Jimmy Butler from keeping his foot on the recruitment pedal online.
After Philadelphia 76ers big man Joel Embiid posted a photo on Instagram captioned with the classic Batman line, “You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain,” Tuesday night — amid rumblings of discord in the team’s ranks — the Heat star saw an opportunity.
“I know a place where villains are welcome,” Butler commented, along with a “shrug” emoji, seemingly a reference to the Heat.
Butler played 55 games with Embiid and the Sixers last season before Kawhi Leonard and the Toronto Raptors bounced them in the conference semifinals. Butler had clashed with teammates and coaches at previous stops, including his brief stint with the Minnesota Timberwolves, but thus far the marriage between he and the Heat has been described as soulmates finding one another.
Embiid’s post includes a photo of him shushing the crowd and another of him shooting a jump shot.
Embiid signed an extension worth $148 million with Philadelphia in 2017 and is not set to be a free agent until 2023, meaning that any sort of move would have to come via trade.
The Heat, currently the No. 4 seed, lead the Sixers by 2.5 games.
