Vic Schaefer leaving Mississippi State for Texas

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Vic Schaefer is going back to the Lone Star State.

The former Mississippi State women’s basketball head coach is turning in his cowbell and heading home to Texas, where he was born in Austin and raised in Houston.

Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte tweeted a photo of Schaefer and his family standing in front of a mounted Longhorn head Sunday afternoon.

The group of five all had their “Hook ’em horns” hand symbols raised up high.

“Guess who’s coming to the Forty…” Del Conte’s tweet said, referencing the Texas campus nickname of “The Forty Acres.”

Schaefer’s sudden departure from Mississippi State ends a tenure that was better than any in program history. He leaves Starkville with a 221-62 record at MSU. He brought the Bulldogs to back-to-back national championship games in 2017 and 2018.

Mississippi State had never made it to the Elite Eight before Schaefer’s arrival. He took his teams there three years in a row from 2017-19.
