The New England Patriots played with heavy hearts in Seattle.
On Sunday evening, the Miami-Dade Police Department announced that Tyrone White, the father of Patriots running back James White, was killed in a car crash on Sunday afternoon in Cooper City, Florida. His wife and James White’s mother, Lisa White, was also in the crash and later airlifted to a hospital.
The Patriots running back was inactive for the Patriots’ loss to the Seattle Seahawks, and it was clear he was on the mind of all his teammates.
“It’s hard to really put into words,” special teams standout Matthew Slater said. “We all have mothers and fathers. To lose a mother or father is never easy. For a tragedy like that to hit the way it did, it hit us all and we were playing with heavy hearts. It puts things into perspective. Football is a job for us. This is what we do to provide for ourselves and families. There are things in life that are so much bigger than this game. I think today was a reminder of that. Life is such a fragile thing.
″… For our brother to lose his father and his parents to be in that accident, I think it hit us all in the heart. We were really struggling with that.”
According to the Broward County (Florida) Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around 1 p.m. on Sunday. When police arrived on the scene, there were two cars, one flipped and the other one on fire. Tyrone White was pronounced dead at the scene while two others were airlifted to a hospital.
When the Patriots game started, the team honored their friend and teammate. At 13:39 of the first quarter, Devin McCourty intercepted Russell Wilson and ran back 43 yards for the touchdown. In the end zone, he yelled, “2-8, we love you bro,” honoring White, who wears No. 28.
“Just devastating,” said McCourty. “It’s been a hard year. Our hearts are heavy for James. It’s tough. There’s nothing you can say or do in this situation. We wanted to go out and play our hearts for him.”
Tom Brady was among the many players who sent out a message to White on social media. The quarterback wrote on Twitter, “So heartbroken to hear the news of the tragedy of my great friend and forever teammate @SweetFeet_White. There are few people that come into your life that do EVERYTHING the right way. James is one of them. Kind, gentle, loving, fiercely competitive and hardworking. His parents raised an amazing son. And we are all grieving with James as he is going through this difficult time. Love you my friend.”
According to NBC, Patriots owner Robert Kraft offered to fly White back to Miami, but the running back decided to return home with the team following Sunday’s game.
“A lot of emotions going into the game… thinking about my brother James,” said Patriots running back Rex Burkhead. “He’s an unbelievable teammate, person, player… it’s a tough deal with what he’s going through. We’re going to continue to pray for him and his family… It’s definitely tough seeing him hurt right now. We tried to go out there and play to the best of our abilities as tough as we could.”
